{"id":1261,"date":"2017-06-01T17:08:32","date_gmt":"2017-06-01T21:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2024-06-06T23:25:25","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T03:25:25","slug":"do-finance-majors-get-the-finance-jobs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/01\/do-finance-majors-get-the-finance-jobs\/","title":{"rendered":"Do finance majors get the finance jobs?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The following is a copy of a post I authored about finance majors for Scouted.  see the original over at the <a href=\"https:\/\/scouted.io\/blog\/candidates\/why-finance-majors-dont-get-finance-jobs\/\">Scouted blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back when I was in college, it felt like everyone majored in Econ (our Finance major equivalent), or Econ and something else (CS in my case). \u00a0At a school with no undergrad business program, Econ was the gateway major to that ultimate of career paths: financial services. \u00a0You know, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.scouted.io\/2017\/04\/05\/finance-101-the-guide-to-jobs-in-the-finance-world\/\">whatever it is that investment bankers do<\/a>.\u00a0 I imagine we all figured knowing a thing or two about global markets and the velocity of money and all that would provide the appropriate foundation for a long and prosperous career in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/5fBH6zoAQg9dHK2ttsc\/giphy.gif\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making it rain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly fifteen years later, unsurprisingly, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/money\/2014\/05\/09\/310114739\/whats-your-major-four-decades-of-college-degrees-in-1-graph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finance is as popular as ever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &nbsp;I got to wondering, does that dogged pursuit of finance actually help in getting a job in the industry?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"does-being-interested-in-finance-help-or-hurt-you-in-the-job-search\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does being interested in finance help or hurt you in the job search?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the questions we ask candidates up front is which of 26 job roles (things like finance, marketing, and software engineering) seem interesting. \u00a0Candidates can pick as many or as few of these as they want. Clearly, folks looking for finance jobs are generally not looking for HR or writing gigs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, these correlations commingle our full-time candidates with the interns. \u00a0Separating them apart, we can see similar interests most of the time. Maybe your secret calling is finance!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an alternate theory, when I was looking for internships in college, I was more interested in exploring varied opportunities before settling into a career following graduation. &nbsp;Perhaps this mentality still holds?
