{"id":699,"date":"2011-11-06T21:44:57","date_gmt":"2011-11-07T02:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/?p=699"},"modified":"2024-06-06T23:26:14","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T03:26:14","slug":"perler-on-sondheim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/2011\/11\/06\/perler-on-sondheim\/","title":{"rendered":"Perler on Sondheim"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sondheim.jpeg?resize=259%2C194&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"sondheim\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sondheim.jpeg?w=259&amp;ssl=1 259w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sondheim.jpeg?resize=120%2C90&amp;ssl=1 120w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/sondheim.jpeg?resize=90%2C68&amp;ssl=1 90w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t get a lot of <a title=\"Stephen Sondheim - Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stephen_Sondheim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Sondheim<\/a>&#8216;s music.\u00a0 His lyrics are certainly impressive and witty, and though my former professor of musical theater <a title=\"Steve Swayne - How Sondheim Found His Song\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/How-Sondheim-Found-His-Sound\/dp\/0472032291\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1320633188&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Swayne<\/a> (Sondheim expert) might throw his hands up at the statement, I nevertheless have trouble digesting\u00a0a good chunk of Sondheim&#8217;s music.\u00a0I had trouble sitting through shows such as <em>Into the Woods<\/em>, <em>Sunday in the Park&#8230;,<\/em> and <em>The Frogs<\/em> &#8211; the interplay of musical themes is there, and they make sense, but the themes themselves never really resonated with me.\u00a0Yet, for every ten oddly discordant or unmelodic Sondheim songs, there&#8217;s one that stands out as tremendous.\u00a0When Sondheim does a good song right, it&#8217;s really right &#8211; and these songs completely justify Sondheim&#8217;s success and relevance in the culture of American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.craigperler.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/22\/pretty-music-jason-robert-brown\/\">musical theater<\/a>.\u00a0Here are a few of my favorites&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly for most, Sondheim wrote some of the music to the movie, <em>Dick Tracy<\/em> (starring Warren Beatty and Madonna).&nbsp;And this entire soundtrack is pretty good.&nbsp;Following Spiderman&#8217;s Broadway debut, there was <a title=\"Dick Tracy on Broadway\" href=\"http:\/\/www.filmcritic.com\/features\/2011\/03\/spider-man-and-dick-tracy-on-broadway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some discussion on the web<\/a> about producing Dick Tracy on stage.&nbsp;Why not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"what-can-you-lose-from-dick-tracy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8220;What Can You Lose?&#8221; from <em>Dick Tracy<\/em><\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What Can You Lose?\" width=\"1160\" height=\"870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ja8BfwmGtY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;Sondheim\u2019s <em>Sweeney Todd<\/em>, death is engrained into the soul of the show. The musical\u2019s hero repeatedly kills people, and then butchers their bodies into meat pies.&nbsp;The reoccurring \u201cBallad of Sweeney Todd\u201d is based on the Dies Irae, the mass for the dead. When Sweeney murders, there is no chorus of angels celebrating the life of the deceased and the flow of the show is hardly interrupted. Accordingly, the romantic ode, &#8220;Johanna&#8221; is both sweet and haunting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"johanna-from-sweetney-todd\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8220;Johanna&#8221; from <em>Sweetney Todd<\/em><\/strong><br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Johanna\" width=\"1160\" height=\"870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ok2541vFicc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For a third selection here, I was torn between <em>A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum<\/em> and <em>Company<\/em>. Both are great shows with no shortage of entertaining and harmonious songs.
